Cloudy, scratched headlight lens covers are a safety hazard as well as a blemish on your vehicle. This condition occurs because the plastic is overexposed to UV light. The cloudiness starts at the exterior surface of the lens cover and spreads inward. In intense sun climates, this damage can be apparent within a couple of years of purchasing a new car.
The good news is that this damage is very common and very fixable. This short tutorial will give you all the skills you need to restore your headlight lens covers.
Diamondite Headlight Lens/ Clear Plastic Restoration Guide
Polish headlights with the Diamondite Plastic Lens Kit to remove scratches, yellowing, and cloudiness. Enhance headlights’ performance and restore their like-new appearance with the industry’s finest headlight polishing system!
The Diamondite Clear Plastic Kit is a three step system to restore, clean, and protect your vehicle’s headlights. The system works with an electric drill or polisher using the included 4 inch pads.
Remove cloudiness and oxidation caused by UV exposure, as well as light scratches and imperfections with the Diamondite Clear Plastic Kit.
The Diamondite Clear Plastic Kit includes:
4 oz. Diamondite Clear Plastic Enhancer
4 oz. Diamondite Clear Plastic Restorer
4 oz. Diamondite Clear Plastic Liquid Armor
4 inch Yellow Foam Cutting Pad
4 inch Orange Foam Light Cutting Pad
2 3/4 inch backing plate
Drill adapter
Cobra Microfiber Towel
Instructions
Before you begin…
Tape off the area surrounding the headlights using painter’s tape. Clean off any loose debris using Diamondite Perfect Vision Glass Cleaner and a soft microfiber towel. Screw the drill adapter into the included backing plate and tighten with a wrench. Insert the adapter into your electric drill and tighten the chuck.
Step 1 – Clear Plastic Enhancer
Press the included yellow cutting pad onto the backing plate. Apply Diamondite Clear Plastic Enhancer™ in an X pattern across the pad. If you are using a drill or rotary polisher, set the maximum speed at 1800 OPM.
Work in an overlapping motion until cleaner breaks down into a clear film. Work up and down and side to side. There is no need to apply pressure to the machine.
Use the included soft microfiber towel to remove residue. Severely stained or scratched lenses may require a second treatment. Note: Avoid polishing over the alignment dowels on the lens cover as they could tear the pad.
Step 2 – Clear Plastic Restorer
Remove the yellow cutting pad and attach the included orange light cutting pad. Dispense Clear Plastic Restorer in an X pattern across the orange pad.
Work at a speed of 1800 RPM on your electric drill. Move the pad up and down and side to side for complete coverage. When the polish starts to dry, turn off the drill and slowly lift it off the headlight lens cover.
Wipe the headlight clean with the included microfiber towel. Repeat step 2 if necessary.
Step 3 – Clear Plastic Liquid Armor
Mist the headlight lens with Clear Plastic Liquid Armor. Two or three pumps should be enough to cover the lens.
Use a microfiber towel to spread the sealant over the lens and flip the towel to buff dry.
Allow the sealant to cure for an hour and then apply another coat if desired.
Maintain the clear shine of your polished plastic headlights with Diamondite Plasti-Care Plastic Cleaner, Polish & Protectant. This aerosol spray cleans and shines plastic headlight covers, and it leaves a anti-static coating to keep them clean longer.
Wolfgang Headlight Lens/ Clear Plastic Restoration Guide
Wolfgang has developed a three-part system that cleans and clarifies plastic lens covers. By removing the cloudiness from the lens, more light is able to pass through the lens cover to better illuminate the road ahead. You can see the road and other drivers can see you.
The Wolfgang Lens Cleaning System is designed to be used with 4” pads and your electric drill. You may also use the included backing plate on your circular polisher. A dual action adapter is sold separately.(LC-46-230DA)
Kit contains:
8 oz. Wolfgang Plastik Surface Sealant
4 oz. Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaner
4 oz. Wolfgang Plastik Lens Glaze
1 microfiber towel
1 orange 4” Low Profile Pad
1 black 4” Low Profile Pad
1 backing plate
1 drill adapter
Getting Started:
You will need a drill or a polisher to use this system. The kit contains a backing plate that fits directly onto an orbital polisher. The included adapter enables the backing plate to be used on a cordless or electric drill.
Step by Step:
Clean loose debris and dirt from the lenses. Tape off the paint around the lenses using blue painter’s tape. This tape is easier to remove than masking tape and has no adverse effects on the clear coat.
Careful! Many headlight lenses have alignment dowels. These are small bumps that protrude from the lens cover. If you go over these bumps with the pad, they will rip the pad. Avoid these bumps when polishing your lenses. It may be necessary to tilt the pad to cut in close to the dowels, but do not go directly over them.
Pour a circle of Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaner onto an orange pad. The cut of this pad will help break down the abrasives in the polish as it removes the haze. Press the pad to the lens cover. If you are using a cordless drill, polish at the highest speed. Use the lowest speed on an electric drill.
If you are using an orbital polisher, set the speed between 1200 and 1500 RPM. If using a dual action polisher, set the speed between 4500 and 5000 OPM.Go over the lens several times in different directions until the polish starts to dry. Use a microfiber towel to buff away the residue. If the lens is still cloudy, repeat this step.
Switch the pad to a black pad. Pour a circle of Wolfgang Plastik Lens Glaze onto the pad. Press it to the lens cover and turn the machine on at the speeds listed above. Work in different directions until the glaze starts to dry. Buff off the residue with a microfiber towel.
Protect your lenses from future damage with Wolfgang Plastik Surface Sealant. It seals the lens surface and blocks out harmful UV light and contamination to maintain clarity. Use it on plastic windows and motorcycle windshields, too. Apply the sealant with a microfiber applicator pad, allow a haze to form, and then buff the lens with a soft, clean microfiber towel.
For the best results, apply Wolfgang Plastik Surface Sealant every time you wax or seal your vehicle. Regular application will keep your front and back lenses crystal clear.
Motorcycles: If you want to restore your motorcycle’s plastic windshield, only follow steps 2 and 3. The Wolfgang Plastik Lens Cleaner is too aggressive for this comparatively soft plastic. Instead, use the Wolfgang Plastik Lens Glaze to clean and restore the windshield, followed by Wolfgang Plastik Surface Sealant for lasting clarity.
You can use the complete system on motorcycle headlights.
Convertible Top Windows: Again, the cleaner has too much cut for soft clear vinyl convertible windows. Use the Wolfgang Plastik Lens Glaze to gently remove scratches and cloudiness. Then apply Plastik Surface Sealant to protect the vinyl from future damage.
Clean Up
Toss your used pads in a solution of Wolfgang Polishing Pad Rejuvenator and water. Dilute one scoop per 3-4 gallons of water. You can cut the solution in half if you’ve only got these two pads to clean. Let them soak for 15 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Let them air dry.
